Empire Place in Kaffe
We are cruising right along! Next up on our parade of Empire Place quilts is this gorgeous version made up in assorted Kaffe Fassett prints and wovens. We love Kaffe and had the crazy idea to chop up his large scale prints and use them in these little paper-piecing sections. My grandma, MaryEllen Laughary made most of this quilt and Juli Kieny finished it up and quilted it just in time for Quilt Market!
We paired a Kaffe print with a coordinating woven and one of three different pink accent wovens to create each block. We stuck with a cooler color palette for the blocks and added a kick of pink in the form of accents to create some interest. All of this put on a denim colored blue woven background makes for a fun and different version of Empire Place!
Quick Quilt Stats:
- Made by: MaryEllen Laughary
- Quilted by: Juli Kieny
- Quilting: Vertical wavy lines
- Pattern: Empire Place
- Fabric: Kaffe Fassett Prints and Wovens for Westminster Fibers
- Finished Size: 72" x 90"
- Techniques: Foundation paper-piecing
I worried that the blocks were going to be too busy with all these large prints, but this quilt quickly became one of my favorites! The solid background and accents act as a calming agent to the prints.
The Empire Place book is available here! Be sure to check out the Empire Place Foundation Papers too! We have now shared 4 of the 6 Empire Place quilts. We are going to continue into the weekend, so stop back by Saturday and Sunday to see two more versions!

I’m busy making this quilt, and enjoying it tremendously. I took a chance with my colour palette, using my colours differently from the examples in the pattern, and it seems to be coming together. Seeing this gorgeous version in Kaffe fabrics took my breath away…my version is softer, in greys, lime and lavender, but also uses prints. I live the way the blocks are coming together, and your Kaffe version makes me more confident that it will work. Lovely!
