Diamond Detour in On Our Way

Primary colors, cars, trucks, race checkers and chunky stripes! Those are the elements that make this Diamond Detour quilt perfect for any little boy's (or girl's) first big kid bed! We originally planned to make the small quilt size, but wanted to include every fabric in the On Our Way fabric line from Riley Blake Designs. We decided to make the grande size and never looked back! This quilt hung in Riley Blake's booth at Quilt Market in Houston.

Instead of the typical neutral background fabric, we decided to let the bright orange, aqua, yellow, green and gray prints sit on a vibrant red tone-on-tone. It gives the quilt an extra kick in the pants!

To continue with the playfulness of the quilt, Kristy quilted this Diamond Detour with a fun all over swirl design. She used a pale yellow thread that blends nicely on all the different fabrics. We bound the quilt in one of the multicolor chunky stripes and it is the perfect finishing touch!

We backed the quilt in the aqua main car toss fabric. There are whimsical firetrucks, dump trucks, police cars, race cars, taxicabs, ambulances and street signs! We also made a label with leftover scraps using our simple technique

I love how this quilt turned out. It may never be gifted to a little boy... and end up on my quilt ladder =] The Diamond Detour pattern is available in PDF and paper form. If you make this or any other Sassafras Lane projects, we would love to see them! Send us photos or post them to our Flickr group. Thanks for stopping by!

Sweet! I like the smaller diamonds as compared to the Diamond Alley pattern blocks. You chose awesome fabric.

I just completed Diamond Alley. Well, actually the top is complete and I’m deciding if I want to use my left over diamond blocks to make a pieced backing. I intentionally made more diamond blocks than I needed thinking that I would use them on the back. Now I’m wavering on that. :/ I used Zen Chic’s Sphere fabric line and it is really lovely with white sashing.
