Introducing Sammy's Safari!
I am very excited to officially introduce the last of our Spring 2016 patterns! This is Sammy's Safari, the sequel to our popular baby quilt pattern Zoey’s Zoo. Sammy's Safari is a fun, quick and customizable appliqué pattern for the newest baby in your life! With 4 different animals to choose from (alligator, elephant, giraffe and monkey) you can find a great personality or nursery match! The quilts finish 40” x 54” and the pattern includes all four animals and the entire alphabet, full-sized, reversed and ready to be traced for appliqué.
Most of you may not know this, but I (Shayla) am a huge superhero fan! When we were picking names to adorn these quilts, we mixed in some Marvel and DC characters. =] Let's meet the newest four characters to join the Sassafras Squad!
Say hello to Mr. Oliver Jonas Queen! This goofy alligator has a slightly mischievous look about him! We had the perfect crocodile print for the border and pulled colors from there! The gold name pops off of the scrappy blue top and bottom borders. Don't let those chompers fool you, he's a big softy!
Meet Ms. Lois Lane Laughary! This hopelessly adorable giraffe is dining on a nice twig of leaves! We found a great print featuring colorful giraffes and hearts for the border and a perfect cloud print for the background! I love that her head is in the clouds! We pulled orange and coral scraps for the top and bottom borders and gave her some wonky eyes!
Say hello to Ms. Jessica Campbell Jones! This big-eared elephant has a look of wonder in her eyes! We combined a black and white elephant print with an assortment of purple scraps and grey fabrics to create this cutie! My favorite part is the little tuft of hair on her head!
Meet Mr. Peter Parker Benjamin! We did a little rearranging on his name to make it fit - we are calling it our creative license =] This little guy is a playful monkey hanging from his tail! We really wanted a large leaf print behind the monkey and pulled a coordinating jungle animal print to accompany it. From there, we added the red-orange colors and the scrappy greens.
My Mom, the amazing talent that is Wolf Creek Quilting, quilted all of these quilts, giving each animal it's own style. My favorite is the bubbles behind the alligator. She used a mixture of serpentine lines, bubbles, stipple, swirls and loops to bring these animals to life!
The Sammy's Safari pattern is available in paper form and includes the full-size, reversed alphabet ready to appliqué and all four animals! If you make this or any other Sassafras Lane project, we would love to see it! Send us photos, post them to our Flickr group or use our #sassafraslane hashtag on Instagram!

Hello, I just bought your pattern and have made the top for the elephant. The baby’s name is Maddie and her mom decorated the nursery with grey and pink elephants, so your pattern was perfect. How did you quilt the top? What color did you use for the elephant’s body, or is it an invisible thread? How did you quilt the letters in the name? I am really stumped on how to quilt these two areas. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! —Annabelle
