Reversible One Way Pillows
Pillows are fun and are popping up everywhere, I mean who doesn’t need a good throw pillow or two or 6 on their couch or bed!?
We have a habit of turning our patterns into pillows to give you another fun idea of what to do with a design, like our Arcadia Avenue Hexagon Pillows and Paradox Point Pyramid Pillows. Now we have taken our popular One Way quilt pattern and made some fun quilted pillows. This pattern is very geometric driven, simple, yet very striking, and it makes great pillows!
We made the pillows using two arrow blocks and added an invisible zipper at the bottom so they are truly reversible!
To make one pillow, you will need:
- One Way quilt pattern
- Enough fabric to make two arrow blocks plus three 3" x WOF strips (we are fans of using scraps to make the background)
- One 12" x 16” pillow form
- Invisible zipper 18" or longer
- Light weight batting or fusible fleece
- Muslin or fabric as lining
Pillow Instructions:
Make two arrow blocks. Add 3" strips to all 4 sides of each block. Layer the arrow block, batting or fleece and lining fabric and quilt as desired. We kept with the geometric style and quilted straight lines in varying widths. Once quilted, trim the blocks to 12½" x 16½". We like our pillow and little fuller, so we cut ours down to 12" x 16".
I absolutely loved Sew Katie Did’s tutorial on adding invisible zippers to pillows. Her instructions are great, and she is right – an invisible zipper foot is worth its weight in gold – especially if you make more than one pillow, and trust us, they are addictive! I used the invisible zipper-by-the-foot and kept the zipper head off the pillow to one end so it doesn't get in the way. I added the zipper to one of the 16” sides of the arrow block sewing the zipper along the entire length of the 16" side. Add the other side of the pillow, be sure you have right sides together! Once you have added the zipper, sew right sides together the remaining three sides, making sure to pull the zipper head inside. You can sew right over the invisible zipper. Trim corners diagonally and turn right side out. Push out the corners and add pillow form. Tada!
We have made a few different sets of these bad boys. The first bunch were made with Alison Glass prints and displayed in our Quilt Market booth on our favorite orange couch!
The next set of pillows were Christmas gifts for my Nick and Alayna. They spruce up and bring a little color their new condo! Shelby, the pup, is also a big fan!
The last few were made as gifts for my sweet little cousins. They each got an arrow pillow with their names paper-pieced into the back-side and a coordinating Mini Churndash Court pillow or scrappy panel pillow!
The One Way pattern is available in PDF and paper pattern. If you make these fun pillows, the whole quilt or any other Sassafras Lane project, we would love to see it! Send us photos, post them to our Flickr group or use our #sassafraslane hashtag on Instagram!
