Introducing my SUMMER LOVIN' Fabric Line!
Seems a bit ironic, a fabric line named Summer Lovin’ being released shortly AFTER Summer ends. Well, since I have no say in when they actually print and ship out the line, we will make lemonade out of these lemons and say this just gives you LOTS of time to get your bright projects done over the dreary months, in time for next Summer!
The INSPIRATION
Summer Lovin’ is my 5th fabric line with Windham Fabrics, following Foundation, Good Vibes Only, Favorite Things and Pura Vida. As the names reflects, this line is inspired by summer love. Not necessarily the romantic fling type, but the small glimmer moments that seem to be in abundance during those warm months. Summer Lovin’ was came to fruition while I was in the land of eternal summer, Hawaii. I doodled all these little reminders of moments and they turned into a complete collection of prints and colors.
“Summer Lovin’ is about all the small moments.
The lingering warmth of sand as you watch the sun disappear behind the waves.
Cruising around the island in a retro van with a freshly plucked daisy in my hair.
Tangy bites of fresh citrus as you stroll the Sunday farmers market.
The colorful 70s wallpaper in your favorite vintage record shop.
Sipping on cold drink on the patio as you watch a post storm rainbow appear.”
The DRAWINGS
It wouldn’t be a fabric line by me if there weren’t come classic line drawings. But the fun thing about Summer Lovin’ is combination of geometrics, lines and organic curves. You know I love color, but it is fun to see all the line drawings together before I doused them color.
The PRINTS
The centerpiece of this line is Cruisin’. This entire print was spawned from a moment when driving on the H3 on our way to Kailua behind an old bus that was about to go through a tunnel. Something about the composition sat in my head for hours, so I sketched it out in my book. I came back to the page and added more arches and began to fill them in, and just like that, this print was born! Fun fact, the colorful version of this fabric is also available in canvas.
Watching the sunset is one of my favorite summer activities no matter where I am in the world. But sitting on a beach and watching the sun disappear into the horizon is pretty magical. This simple line design is inspired by just that.
This line also has a touch of retro 70s vibes to it. I have a page in my notebook full of funky shaped daisies that fit into one another and one night woke up to the idea of a “hexagonal grid” full of daisies. So the next morning I began sketching it out. I ended up liking it best without showing the grid, but each on of these daisies nestles nicely into a hexagon! This print also comes in a fun canvas!
Perusing the fresh fruit selection at the local farmer’s market has always been a favorite summer activity of mine! I had a repeating clamshell design sketched out and wondered what it would look like if I replaced a few pieces with a slice of citrus fruit. Turns out, it is pretty darn cute!
One of my favorite weekend activities with my partner is flipping through all the eclectic records at a music shop that opened in the 70s. The wall paper is layered with different colorful prints of mustard, olive and burnt orange. This Arches design is a combination of a few of the wall papers to make it a bit more modern, and recolored to be much more bright!
This next design my look a little familiar if you’ve been following us for a little while. I reworked this design from my Pura Vida fabric line. I tweaked to be more of a line drawing and love how it turned out. There is nothing more relaxing than listening to the waves crash. I love sitting a little beach chair, smothered in sunscreen, reading a guilty pleasure read with the sound of waves as the backdrop.
Now what would a fabric line be without a stripe? Or my version of a stripe that is! This design was meant to incorporate all the beauty coming from the horizon and sky. Everything from the sunsets to sunrises, the down pouring of rain to the rainbow aftermath, all in a simple stripe.
I loved how the line drawings were looking with this line and wanted to add one more design to the bunch. I had a sketch of these different lined “fills” in boxes and decided to repeat it out and see how it looked. Well, long story short, I loved it and thought it looked perfect with this line!
Remember when I mentioned that two of the designs are available in Canvas? Here they are! The colorful Cruisin’ print is such a fun, bright and show stopping canvas fabric. And these white Daisies on a black background make the most versatile but fun canvas fabric!
The SWATCHES
Summer Lovin’, like all my fabric lines creates a nice full spectrum of colors. But for the first time, I added some black and white prints and created color families of prints that look fantastic together and share colors, while at the same time playing nicely with the other color-ways because of small overlapping continuances. Here are the original print outs in their color families.
The BUNDLES
Summer Lovin’ fabric bundles will ship next month and are now available to pre-order. Every pre-ordered bundle will receive a FREE Summer Lovin’ Sticker and will ship out first once the fabric arrives! Just a little incentive to get those pre-orders in!
Check back soon for a post all about the projects of the Summer Lovin’ Lookbook! There are quite a few goodies in there and it is always fun to see the fabric in use. See you soon!
