Free Patchwork Ghost Mini Pattern

Happy October Everyone! Making these free patchwork mini patterns brings me so much joy. We have made a Pineapple, Pear, Apple, Orange, Heart and Cactus. I love looking up at my mini wall and seeing all these creations and last week I got an itch to make another! Since it is officially Fall, a little ghost seemed like the perfect project. This little guy finishes at 10in x 13in.

YouTube Video Tutorial

We put together a fun little video tutorial for this ghostly guy! 👻

Materials Needed

    • assorted low volume scraps
    • one black scrap
    • 1/8 yard of background
    • 1/8 yard for binding (we love to piece together leftovers from past bindings)
    • one fat-quarter for backing

Cutting Instructions

From the assorted low volume scraps, cut:

    • forty 1-1/2” squares
    • five 1-7/8” squares
    • two 1” x 1-1/2" rectangles

From the black scrap, cut:

    • two 1” x 1-1/2" rectangles

From the background, cut:

    • two 1-1/2" squares
    • five 1-7/8” squares
    • two 2-1/2” x 9-1/2” rectangles
    • two 2-1/2” x 10-1/2” rectangles

Sewing Instructions

To make the half-square triangles: 1. Layer a 1-7/8” low volume square and background square right sides together. 2. Draw a line down the center. 3. Using a 1/4” seam, sew on both sides of the square. 4. Cut along the drawn line. 5. Press the seams open.

1

Make 10 total half square triangles. Sew the 1" x 1-1/2" black rectangles to the 1" x 1-1/2" low volume rectangles to make the eyes.

2

Sew the squares and half-square triangles into 9 rows of 6 squares. Press the seams open. Sew the rows together to form the ghost. Press the seams open.

3

Sew the 2-1/2” x 9-1/2” background rectangles to each side of the ghost. Press towards the background. Sew the 2-1/2” x 10-1/2” rectangles to the top and bottom. Press towards the background.

4

Finish the Quilt

Layer the ghost, batting and backing fabric. Quilt as desired. We quilted a 1" grid on one ghost, horizontal lines 1/2" apart on another and an elongated vertical zigzag on the last. Cut your binding strips 2-1/4” wide and sew them together end to end on the diagonal. Iron in half lengthwise and sew it to the quilt in your favorite method. Voila!
