Free Easy Coaster Tutorial

I whipped these fun little guys up for my Foundation booth last October and they were a hit. I don’t remember where I originally saw these, but I grew up with these all around our house. These make great hostess gifts for holiday parties, and because I find you can never have enough coasters lying around - here's a quick tutorial! All you need are five 5” charm-squares to get started.

I made two different styles. One that resembled a quarter-square triangle and the other a four patch.

Quarter-Square Triangle Coaster

1. Fold four of your squares in half diagonally, wrong sides together and press.

2. With your bottom square right side up, layer the triangles onto the square covering it.

3. On your last triangle, tuck the last bit under the first triangle.

4. Clip or pin all the pieces in place.

5. Sew along all four edges with a 1/4” seam and clip the corners.

6. Turn the coaster by opening it through the triangles. Push out the corners and press. Voila!

Four Patch Coaster

1. Fold four of your squares in half, wrong sides together and press.

2. With your bottom square right side up, layer the rectangles onto the square covering it.

3. On your last rectangle, tuck the last bit under the first rectangle.

4. Clip or pin all the pieces in place.

5. Sew along all four edges with a 1/4” seam and clip the corners.

6. Turn the coaster by opening it through the rectangles. Push out the corners and press. Voila!

I love making these for home warming gifts! You can coordinate them to match your space and they add a little homemade flair. They are fast, fun and functional! Enjoy!

Try making some round ones, too. Use pinking shears around the circle, and no corners to try and make nice.

I really liked this little tutorial. Thank you for making it.

Please let me know which fabrics these are. They look great!

I have your pattern Cadence Court and am going to start it later this year.

Thank you,
Dale
